Greens visited high flying leaders Claydon which turned out to be a bit of a thriller, in terms of passion and excitement, coming away with a point after a hard fought 1-1 draw.
Coaches Newman and Garwood knew a top motivational speech would be needed and after looking around for someone to give one decided to have a go themselves. We had lost four players prior to kick off due to illness and rocked up with the bare nine however the boys delivered for those in their sick bed unable to join the fun.
We found ourselves one behind on 15 minutes after a well taken header from a corner that keeper Toby was unlucky not to collect the cross. The game was fairly even without many chances before we had a good shout for a penalty, which was waived away by Claydon’s Coach/Referee. More drama was to come when we looked to have equalised on half time when their goalkeeper dropped the ball but Alex’s poke home was disallowed for kicking the ball from hands, probably a reasonable decision.
The second half we raised our game and only an in form keeper kept us at bay until his resistance was beaten by Alex in typical fashion racing clear from a flat back three.
Eoin dominated defence ably supported by George and a possessed Seb who won absolutely everything as well as the MOTM.
The team kept going and our chance creation as per past weeks clocked double figures, hitting the woodwork four times and resulting in more inspired keeping. Claydon were still dangerous on the break but we coped well, Toby offering safe hands and reflexes when needed.
On the final whistle Claydon seemed relived, their coach telling us afterwards this had been their toughest game.
A tremendous performance form all the boys, Tom with his high octane runs down the right, Joe dominating in midfield with his snake hip runs, Smiler ghosting as a holding midfielder, Aston and Alex always looking a danger.
A satisfying end to 2021’s league fixtures tinged perhaps with a bit of disappointment not gaining all the points, nevertheless we remain unbeaten since Sept. However much more pleasing is the pace the boys are developing and the never give up attitude that has been instilled both will hold us in good stead for this seasons second half.
Away to Kesgrave Kestrels Whites from Div 4 next week in a friendly.
